Association of Polar Early Career Scientists

For APECS International Polar Week September 2020 the National Committees organized the following events:

Polar Film Fest

APECS GermanyAPECS Germany participated in the Polar Film Festival organized by USAPECS.
Movie night with an introduction about APECS, short movies provided by US APECS and a meet'n'greet with a MOSAiC scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Potsdam, Germany.

US APECS Polar Film Fest

USAPESC newUSAPECS organizedg the 5th Polar Film Fest. They were looking to showcase fun, informative and artistic movies about the Arctic, Antarctic, and wider cryosphere – no matter what language they are in! In the past, featured movies ranged from independently-produced videos, interviews and short news reports to 30 min long documentaries, so they welcomed a diversity of submissions. We invited submissions to the following topics:- Dreamland Fieldwork, - The Great Arctic Drift: Polar Research, - Ask a Polar Scientist, - Homegrown: Stories by Indigenous Storytellers, - “What is it that you do again?”: Explaining Polar Science, - Represent for the Alpine: The Quest for the Perfect Powder

FjordPhyto Highlight during USAPECS Polar Week

USAPESC newIn tandem with USAPECS polar week, FjordPhyto program highlighted various elements through their online platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Blogs @FjordPhyto).

In tandem with USAPECS polar week fall 2020 the FjordPhyto team showcased their polar Citizen Science program FjordPhyto, using their social media channels (@FjordPhyto) to highlight the citizen scientists involved collecting samples from Antarctica, the students involved analyzed the samples, preliminary results thus far, showed off phytoplankton they have imaged under SEM microscopy, etc. They also submitted a film to Polar Film Fest (Drifters of the Sea by Gabriela Lamanna) We will do a mix of Instagram stories, feed posts, short videos and pictures.

Creativity Competition

APECS GermanyStudents of German universities could enter a creativity challenge by producing an outreach product (e.g. graphics, animations, film, audio, anything else!) on a polar fact or theme! The German Society of Polar Research awarded the first prize with 500 €.

APECS-France - IPEV - Live webinar with the overwintering Scientists of the French-Italian Base Concordia (Antarctica)

APECS France logoDuring the Fall Polar Week 2020 of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists APECS, the French National committee (APECS-France) in partnership with the French Polar Institut (IPEV-Institut Paul Emile Victor) invited over-wintering scientists from Concordia station (IPEV-PNRA/ENEA) in Antarctica to present their work and daily life during and post-polar night to the public through a live-recorded webinar both in French and Italian, on 26th of September from 09:00 to 12:00 (GMT).

Breaking the ice with APECS-Chile

APECS-Chile organited three inspiring talks.

APECS Chile copyMonday 21st, September, at 15:00 GMT, Dr. Andrea Piñones (COPAS, IDEAL Center, Universidad Austral de Chile) and Dr. Luis Huckstadt (Institute of Marine Sciences, University of California Santa Cruz) were invited to discuss the subject "Defining ecological baselines for sentinel species in high latitude marine ecosystems". This conversation was moderated in English by Renato Borrás (CAPES, PUC) (APECS-Chile National Representative). It was also explained “how, through sensors attached to animals, they managed to describe the movement patterns and habitat preferences of Antarctic pinnipeds, the environment where they live and develop, and to establish ecological baselines to help us understand the ongoing environmental changes”.

Wednesday 23rd, September, at 15:00 GMT, we were accompanied by our guest Dr. Eduardo Castro (Universidad Andres Bello, Center for Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology), who will told us about "Earth, wind and roots: Antarctic teleconnexions and effect on terrestrial biota". This conversation was moderated in English by Renato Borrás (CAPES, PUC) (APECS-Chile National Representative), and they discussed “to understand the teleconnections between Antarctica and the rest of the world through the lens of pollutant and microbial transport, and to evaluate their reservoirs and possible sources”.

Thursday 24th, September, at 20:30 GMT, we were accompanied by our guest Dr. Julieta Orlando (Genomic Antarctic Biodiversity, Laboratory of Microbial Ecology, Universidad de Chile), who did a reflection and told us about her work titled "In science there is no path, you make the path as you go: The evolution of microbiology among seas, lakes and soils Antarctica" / “En ciencias no hay camino, se hace camino al andar: El devenir de una microbióloga entre mares, lagos y suelos antárticos”. This talk was moderated in Spanish by Dra. Maria Estrella Alcamán (CR2, UdeC) & Dra. Claudia Maturana (IEB) (both APECS-Chile National Committee). In this conversation, we followed the way that our guest chose: “Paths of science are not free from meandering, bifurcations and even obstacles. We talked about chances, coincidences, accidents and a touch of luck to become inserted in the development of Antarctic science. The way of this microbiologist included the study of lichens, soils, penguins, urchins, fish and lakes, among other Antarctic models and environments”
