CALL FOR PAPERS

Title:
Long-Term Changes in Arctic Social-Ecological Systems

Organizers:
Andrey N Petrov and Stanislav Ksenofontov

Description:
The Arctic is undergoing rapid environmental, socio-cultural and economic transformation. Monitoring current change and anticipating future developments in along-term perspective is an important, but underdeveloped task. Assessing the sustainability and resilience of social-ecological systems (SES) involves a better understanding of the complex interactions between social and ecological domains and facilitates the creation of resilient systems and communities. This session aims at exploring how Arctic communities and stakeholders deal with the combined challenges from climate change, political, economic and resource pressures, changesto the global order and new social-cultural realities and what the future might hold for the Arctic The session recognizes the opportunities presented by integrated interdisciplinary approaches to understanding long-term changes developed within the biophysical, social, humanities and arts scholarship and brings together paper focused on SES, the interaction of society and place, and the future social-ecologicalchange scenarios. These papers will contribute to the understanding of long-termhuman responses to Arctic environmental change and long-term transformative impacts of human activities on Arctic ecosystems, including: (1) improving understandings of long-term human responses to specific climate change ‘events’; (2) providing insights into long-term human impacts on Arctic and sub-Arctic biological diversity; (3) enhancing understanding human strategic responses and decision-making ‘pathways’ in Arctic SES’s over generational time scales; and (4) engagement of the Indigenous knowledge in understanding social-ecological dynamics at different time scales.

This session is supported by IASC; early career scholars may be eligible for partial travel funding.

Register and submit abstract at https://www.en.assw2019.science/ by 28 February 2019.

CALL FOR MEETING SPACE

The Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) was initiated by IASC in 1999 to provide opportunities for coordination, cooperation and collaboration between the various scientific organizations involved in Arctic research and to economize on travel and time. ASSW is now an annual venue for meetings of Arctic organizations, scientific collaborations, and more.

REQUEST MEETING SPACE HERE before 8 March 2019.

During ASSW2019 there will be three days dedicated to IASC & Arctic community meetings (22 May, 23 May, and 26 May); ASSW2019 will also feature an Arctic Science Symposium. The entire Arctic community is encouraged to use ASSW as a venue for bringing together their organizations, collaborations, and teams. ASSW organizers provide the logistical support and your meeting attendees only have to register for ASSW209 and show up.

Please fill out this form to request a space and we will do our best to accommodate your request. The application deadline is 8 March and a draft program is expected to be ready in mid-March.
