During the SCAR Open Science Conference (OSC) 2026 in Oslo, APECS will host “Pathways to policy - Antarctic governance and science-based decision-making” - a workshop to support Early Career Researchers in contributing to policy making processes. This workshop is financially supported by the European Geoscience Union (EGU) through the EGU Training School scheme and thus a limited number of travel grants are available for participants of the workshop in support of their attendance of the SCAR OSC.

The workshop, organized by the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) International Directorate, is part of the programme of the SCAR OSC and will take place on 12 August  from 11:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 15:30 (Session ID O11 in the SCAR OSC schedule). Spanning two sessions, this workshop will provide insights and training for the Antarctic research community to generate and communicate knowledge that informs policy-making in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, including an introduction to processes and relevant bodies in policy making. No prior knowledge is required to attend and we encourage everyone that is interested in developing their skills to communicate and advocate for the inclusion of their research outcomes in policy making processes to participate.

Participation in the workshop is open to all participants of the SCAR OSC 2026. A limited number of travel grants of up to 600 EUR is available to ECRs who completed their highest degree (e.g. BSc, MSc or PhD) within the past seven years. The deadline to submit an application for travel support through this form is 15 June 2026, 23:59 GMT. Applicants will be notified by 26 June about the outcome of their funding application. Selected applicants have to confirm their ability to attend the workshop by no later than two weeks after being notified. Participation in the workshop is mandatory for everyone receiving travel funding through this call.
