IASC Fellowship Program 2024
The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), in cooperation with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation (PA2F) and the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), is launching its IASC Fellowships Program 2024.
The application deadline is on 18 October at 13:00 GMT. All of the information below is also available on the IASC Fellowship Program webpage.
The IASC Fellowship Program is meant to engage early career researchers in the work of the five IASC Working Groups (WGs):
- Atmosphere WG (AWG)
- Cryosphere WG (CWG)
- Marine WG (MWG)
- Social & Human WG (SHWG)
- Terrestrial (TWG)
In addition to the work in the IASC Working Groups, the Fellows will also be engaged in the work of the Research Priority Teams for the 4th International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP IV).
For the 10th anniversary year of the IASC Fellowship Program in 2024 we will offer 10 IASC Fellowships. As part of the Polar Initiative with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, three of those Fellowships will be generously funded by the Foundation.
- one regular IASC Fellow will be selected per IASC WG (5 Fellowships in total).
- one IASC Indigenous Fellow will be selected; this individual will be an early career Arctic Indigenous Scholar or Knowledge Holder who can choose which IASC WG to engage in. The IASC Indigenous Fellows will also join the new IASC Standing Committee on Indigenous Involvement that will commence its work in the first half of 2024.
- three IASC-PA2F Fellows will be selected who can choose which IASC WG to engage in.
Another fellowship will be offered via the IASC-ROADS Fellowship which has a separate application process. The Sustaining Arctic Observing Network (SAON) has initiated the Roadmap for Arctic Observing and Data Systems (ROADS) as a planning framework to support its national and organizational partners. In partnership with IASC these efforts are offering an IASC-ROADS Fellowship to support an early career researcher to get more involved in the work of SAON-ROADS.
IASC Fellows are doctoral or postdoctoral researchers who actively participate in selected activities of the IASC WGs. Fellows are expected to contribute scientifically and also to help organize specific activities and to help with reporting to the IASC Secretariat. Thus, the Fellowship Program provides the opportunity for early career researchers to become involved in leading-edge scientific activities at a circum-Arctic and international level, to build an international network, and also to develop management skills. The level of involvement very much depends on the Fellow's interest - the more you invest, the more you get out of it!
The total duration of the IASC Fellowship Program is 1+2 years. During their first year, the Fellows will receive travel support to attend two consecutive Arctic Science Summit Weeks (ASSWs) where the annual IASC WG meetings are held. After this year, Fellows have the opportunity to stay involved for up to two more years without dedicated funding support from IASC. Note: the travel support during the first Fellowship year is the only financial remuneration for the Fellows. Salary is not included during the Fellowship.

IASC-ROADS Fellowship 2024
The Sustaining Arctic Observing Network (SAON) has initiated the Roadmap for Arctic Observing and Data Systems (ROADS) as a planning framework to support its national and organizational partners. In partnership with the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) these efforts are offering an IASC-ROADS Fellowship to support an early career researcher to get more involved in the work of SAON-ROADS. As an open initiative uniting Arctic and non-Arctic nations and organizations, SAON holds a unique position in the facilitation of and planning for sustained Arctic observational networks in support of societal benefit. The ROADS principle for equitable inclusion of Indigenous Peoples presents broad opportunities for shaping the governance of the ROADS process at its earliest stages, particularly in the robust establishment of processes and tools to support Co-Production of Knowledge (CPK) and equitable engagement of Indigenous Peoples in the process. We envision that a ROADS Fellow could engage in crafting foundational guidance and protocols related to CPK and Indigenous engagement, as well as work on engagement strategies. Early career researchers that specialized in CPK or Indigenous engagement are highly encouraged to apply; preference will be given to Arctic Indigenous Scholars or Knowledge Holders.
The application deadline is on 18 October at 13:00 GMT.
Fellowship Commitment
The duration of the Fellowship will be one year. During their appointment, the Fellow will be expected to attend the following meetings:
- the Arctic Science Summit Week 2024 (ASSW 2024) and Arctic Observing Summit 2024 (21 - 29 March 2024 in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK)
- Online meetings of the ROADS Advisory Panel
- other online meetings and workshops organized by SAON related to the SAON ROADS process
- 4th International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP IV) / ASSW 2025 (21 - 28 March 2025 in Boulder, Colorado, USA)
Travel support to attend the ASSW 2024 and ICARP IV / ASSW 2025 for the IASC-ROADS Fellow during their Fellowship will be provided by IASC. Salary is not included during the Fellowship.
Fellowship Deliverables
- Fellows will deliver meeting reports for the ROADS Advisory panel
