The 3rd China Polar Youth Forum Successfully Held in Beijing!
The 3rd China Polar Youth Forum, organized by APECS China and hosted by the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, was successfully held at the Second Floor Conference Hall of the Meteorological Science and Technology Building of the China Meteorological Administration from June 13th to 15th, 2023. More than 200 experts, scholars, and students from over 50 universities and research institutions across China participated in the event. Representatives from the Polar Research Office of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration also attended the forum.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Ding Minghu, the first President of APECS China and a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. Speeches were delivered by Susana Hancock, Chair of the International Polar Youth Scientists Forum, Ding Chen, President of the International Association of Polar Protection, and Gao Yun, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. Keynote speeches were given by Xu Xiangde, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and researcher at the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Kang Shichang, Vice President of the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qiao Fangli, academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and Deputy Director of the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, Cheng Xiao, Dean of the School of Geomatics, Sun Yat-sen University, and Qin Weijia, Inspector of the National Polar Research Office.
The conference received over 100 abstract submissions and featured seven thematic sessions: "Cryosphere," "Sea Ice," "Ocean," "Atmosphere," "Science Popularization," "Geopolitics," and "Engineering." During the forum, there were face-to-face interactions and free exchanges between young teachers and students, which received unanimous praise from the participants. To enhance the interest and participation of graduate students in polar science, APECS China provided travel support for selected students and awarded prizes for outstanding graduate presentations and posters.
The China Polar Youth Forum serves as the annual meeting of APECS China and aims to provide a platform for young polar scholars in China to communicate and collaborate. It showcases achievements and progress in polar research, explores trends and future directions in the field, promotes interdisciplinary exchange and cooperation, sparks curiosity and thirst for knowledge about the polar regions among young students, attracts and cultivates more young polar researchers, and enhances the influence of Chinese polar scientific research.

APECS China's second council meeting
On June 13, 2023, the second council meeting of the China Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS China) was held in the China Meteorological Administration. 40 directors from 25 units across the country attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Ding Minghu, chairman of the council. President Ding Minghu first made a work report on behalf of the first executive committee of the first council, reporting in detail on the relevant work of the council in the past five years. Subsequently, the council collectively discussed the revised draft amendment of the articles of association, and approved the list of directors. 41 directors from 31 units across the country formed the second council. The second council then elected the executive committee of the second council, and researcher Li Chuanjin from the Polar Research Institute of China was elected chairman of the second council. Associate Professor Wang Xianwei of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zheng Lei of Sun Yat-sen University and Zhang Tong of Beijing Normal University were elected vice chairman. Nominated by Chairman Li Chuanjin, all the directors adopted the decision on Tian Biao, engineer of Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, as secretary-general, and Xiao Enzhao, associate researcher of Polar Research Institute of China, as deputy secretary-general. The council has also discussed other matters simultaneously. Professor Ding Minghu finally made a concluding speech, stressing that the new executive committee of the council should continue to expand the influence of APECS China in China, build a broader platform to unite more organizations and individuals in China, actively communicate with the competent international organizations (APECS), apply for more international support, and make more voices on behalf of the Chinese Council.
