IPCC SOD WGI AR6

The Working Group II (WGII) contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) is due to be finalized in 2021. The Second Order Draft (SOD) of the IPCC AR6 WGII report will be open for expert review from 4 December 2020 to 29 January 2021.

The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), the Past Global Changes Early Career Network (PAGES ECN), the Permafrost Young Research Network (PYRN) and the Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) community are coordinating a group review of the SOD of the IPCC AR6 WGII report by early career scientists.

We are now looking for reviewers to participate in this group review. Participants will be asked to review a minimum of 10 to 20 pages of the report (if you want to review the entire report, the IPCC offers opportunities to do so from its side). These are not anonymous reviews; experts reviewers will be recognized for their valuable contribution with their name, affiliation, and country of residence being published in the Annex of Reviewers of the WGII report, once it is published. For example, here is the Annex of Expert Reviewers of the IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C Global Warming. Moreover, reviewers not only get recognized as early career experts, but also gain valuable training and insight on the scientific review process for reports addressed to policy makers.

Information about past group reviews

In 2018 APECS successfully coordinated two group reviews of the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC). In partnership with PAGES ECN, PYRN, YESS and MRI, APECS has organized group reviews of the first order drafts of the WGI and WGII contribution to the IPCC AR6, as well as of the second order draft of the WGI contribution to the IPCC AR6.

Given the success of these group reviews, we have decided to continue this work and organize the group review of the SOD of the WGII contribution to the IPCC AR6.

Who can participate in this group review?

We encourage early career researchers at various career stages to participate in this review. Early career researchers are applicants who fall into one of these categories:

  • Master’s degree students.
  • PhD students.
  • Postdoctoral researchers.
  • Early career scholars (up to 5 years from PhD completion).

Reviewers need to be familiar with the recent literature in their field. Their field of expertise should be related to the content of the report (you can find the outline of the report here).

Please ensure that you will be available to participate in the review from December 2020 to mid-January 2021, which is when this group review will take place. Previous reviewers spent on average 40 hours on the process, including training and reviewing.

How to apply

If you want to participate in this group review, please fill in this form no later than September 23, 2020 (23:59 GMT). The selection criteria will be based on research experience and motivation. Moreover, we will try to balance the selection of applicants based on gender, career stage and country of citizenship.

Selected participants will be contacted in November 2020. Further information about the review process will be shared with selected participants.

If you have any questions about this opportunity, please contact the project group leader: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. You can find more information about the general review process of the IPCC WGII report here.
