APECS International Polar Week is a traditional APECS event held twice a year during the equinoxes (March and September), that is, the dates when the Sun is exactly above the Equator, making day and night of approximately equal length in the northern and southern hemispheres. This is a celebration of the polar and alpine regions with the aim of increasing interest and knowledge about these regions.

The next international polar week will take place between 26-30 September 2022 and on these dates, we want to engage students, researchers, educators and everyone interested in the polar regions to share experiences and curiosities at a series of events around the world.

We are planning to cover several topics during the week including the Arctic, Antarctica and Alpine regions, the importance of polar regions for climate change, polar art and polar engineering.

Together with APECS National Committees and the APECS Project Groups, we invite everyone to take part in this important celebration! Join us in celebrating the upcoming Polar Week from 26-30 September 2022 with the activities:

Short Story/Essay Competition

546 Essay competition Arnab Paul Srilakshmi ChidambaramWe want YOU to share your voice on what the ecosystem & biodiversity in the polar regions mean to you. The September Polar Week 2022 short story/essay competition is a great way to showcase your ideas, creativity and commentary locally and on a global scale. Don’t miss out!

Short stories must be 500 words or less. Feel free to be creative as you would like, fiction and non-fiction accepted but they must have a link to the main theme – Ecosystems and Biodiversity. Individuals can submit up to two entries. Any age accepted. Entries must be submitted by 24th November 23:59 pm GMT, via Google Forms: https://forms.gle/6TJAFZQMnFPinBKU7. Through your submission, APECS will be given the right to use your poster for promotional, but not commercial, purposes.

6th Annual USAPECS Film Festival - movies still available!

547 PolarWeek USAPECSFilmFestThe festival will showcase several short videos on topics related to the Polar regions to the public and broader APECS community. Films will be hosted each day digitally on our website.

Ahead of International Polar Week 2022, USAPECS is hosting the 6th annual Polar Film Fest during September 19-23, 2022. For five days, the Polar Film Fest will feature short films about the Arctic, Antarctic, and wider cryosphere.
