APECS Chile started as a small enthusiastic group. Shortly after the group grew in number and activities. Since then this national committee has run discussion panels at diverse scientific conferences, such as the International Glaciological Conference Ice and Climate Change "A View from the South" and the PAGES II International Symposium "Reconstructing Climate Variations in South America and the Antarctic Peninsula over the last 2000 years". Members and mentors of APECS-Chile, in association with the EXPLORA program of the Commission of Science and Technology and the Chilean Antarctic Institute, have brought science to school-rooms. They've volunteered to teach young school students about science topics and have encouraged students from all over the country to participate. They aim to put scientists and the younger generations together, and hopefully to inspire some youth to follow a scientific path.
