ICE LOSS? SAFE, MAN!
Education and Outreach
IPY Field School 2012, Longyearbyen, Svalbard
2012
We discuss the question of the existence of a critical melting point, beyond which the sea ice cannot recover, motivated by the lately observed loss of arctic sea ice as the minimum extent in 2007.
Taking feedback mechanisms as the ice-albedo feedback and the different growth rates of first-year and multi-year ice into account we conclude that there will most likely be no tipping point for the loss of arctic summer sea ice under current climate conditions, as the sea ice can rapidly recover in the winter.
