CLIMATE CRISIS: DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

BeNeLux APECS Symposium, 11 - 12 October 2012, Ghent Belgium
2012
As a teacher at a technical High School in Belgium, I organised a

1) interdisciplinary project ‘Struggle for Poles’.
2) Polar Day at our school: 12 scientists and climate-specialist gave a presentation about the poles, climate change and the Belgian zero-emission pole base..
3) Polar Night for a wider community about Antarctica:.
4) Awareness campaign ‘Climatecrisis’ for four neighbourhood-schools with a lecture of Serge de Gheldere and myself. We collected money for a tree-planting-project in Bolivia, where people living in the mountains already suffer from global warming because the melting glaciers.
My pupils
1) sold selfmade Christmascards and the proceeds were donated at Sea Shepherd and Unicef for one of the most urgent problems of the future, as a consequence of global warming: WATER.
2) raised money to buy solar- coocking systems for Senegal. Thanks to the use of solar ovens up to 50% can be saved in wood.
3) planted a little forest in Londerzeel: There was also an educational approach: the students learned to measure the volume of a tree and calculate the amount of CO2 the tree already captured in his wood. Now we use the forest to do measurements of the biodiversity and the growth of the trees.
4) are making a solar-tracker for Antarctica: one solar-tracker will be operational in Antarctica and another solar-tracker will work at our school in February 2013. Our pupils, together with pupils in Europe trough our Comenius-project will compare the solar-gain and weather conditions of Antarctica with these of our school. This in a interdisciplinary project beyond the boundaries.
5) made a Technical Ecological Schoolgarden. In this Learning Garden there is a lot to explore but I give some examples of theses our pupils realised in this area. There is a coop with a automatic feed system and a chicken coop with a green roof. The food waste of our refectory is given to these chickens. The green waste is composted in the compost place. There is also a pond and a water treatment. The energy of the pump comes from PV-panels. The maintenance is done by our younger pupils.
6) made an educational website (www.klimaatwebsite.be). On this website you can visit a virtual carbondioxide-free eco-village. You can, in a playful but scientifically based way, search for several steps you can take to live sustainable. This can range from small, individual solutions to large, shared infrastructure measures in terms of spatial planning. You can find information about the atmosphere, the greenhouse effect.
7) expanded this website with a view at the earth-poles.
We made educational material for teachers and several interdisciplinary projects like our CO2-free sportsday and a virtual geocache. With 2 times 20 multipule-choice questions you get more to know about the Belgian pole-base and the scientific research.

I hope that this poster can inspire teachers and scientists to work more together.
