Soils from Bjørdalen, Spitsbergen evolve under polar climatic and periglacial geomorphologic conditions, with permafrost presence, a strong physical and chemical weathering and thin vegetal cover, pedogenetic factors that lead to a thin soil cover, dominated by Leptic, Gleyic and Mollic Cryosols and Leptosols.
