During IPY marine birds that were used for dietary studies were also opportunistically used to assess marine plastic pollution in Arctic waters. Post IPY, even though our studies have shown that plastic pollution is on the rise in Arctic waters, we still lack a plan to monitor marine pollution, unlike other regions such as the North Sea where monitoring programs have been implemented. Opportunistic monitoring of ingested plastics is continuing beyond IPY, but without a plan and indicator species being targeted, we lack the ability to examine spatial and temporal patterns over the long term.
Seabirds, northern fulmars, thick-billed murres, marine debris, plastic ingestion, Uria lomvia, Fulmarus glacialis, Arctic, Canada
