The UK Polar Network (UKPN) was formed in April 2007 as part of the International Polar Year, and makes up the UK branch of APECS (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists). The UKPN has three main aims: (i) to provide networking opportunities for early career polar researchers (ii) to promote polar issues to young people through education and outreach, and (iii) to provide information about polar issues via newsletters and a dedicated website. There are currently over 200 UKPN members, including an enthusiastic management committee, all of whom are involved in various fields of polar research.

At its outset, UKPN members were instrumental in organizing APECS events, and the UKPN continues to contribute significantly to early career polar events on an international scale. More locally, UKPN members have been actively involved in encouraging polar research at many levels. At the July 2009 IGS IPY conference in Newcastle, the UKPN hosted a mentoring panel, a social event for informal networking, and several outreach sessions at a local science centre. In addition, the UKPN will be presenting an activity at the British Science Festival at the University of Surrey 5-10 September, 2009 encouraging children to think about the challenges of Antarctic science.

The UKPN’s most recent large initiative is a series of three Career Skills Workshops; each workshop uses a combination of science talks, practical training sessions, a poster session, group and panel discussions, and social events in order to reach our goals of distributing scientific and technical knowledge, encouraging collaboration, and providing advice on careers in polar sciences. The first in the series, the Atmospheric Sciences Workshop, held 29 April – 1May, 2009 at the British Antarctic Survey was a huge success with 35 enthusiastic early career polar researchers coming together from around the world. Building on this momentum, an Arctic Marine Sciences Workshop will be held 12-13 October, 2009 at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory and a Cryospheric Sciences Workshop will be held 4-6 November, 2009 at the University of Sheffield.
With this poster we would like to encourage early career scientists to get involved in the UKPN and take part in our activities. We also greatly appreciate the help of the not-so-early career scientists who have supported events in the past and encourage them to be involved in the future. We are excited to answer any questions you have about the UKPN, interested in encouraging further involvement, and would be happy to hear from anyone who has ideas for future UKPN events or who would be willing to give a talk, host a training session or share their experiences as polar scientists.
