NAROS: A New Open Access Tool for Polar Research ? supporting Education, Outreach and Communication

  • General public
NAROS will be an efficient tool for outreach and communication of research, to the benefit of all society, and be a powerful tool for disseminating the IPY research. Common standards of metadata enable easy collection of documents from various sources. Services exist that collect all these open scholarly documents. From this pool of open documents, NAROS will use filtering terms to extract all documents relevant to the high north. NAROS will include documents in any subject and produced at any research institution in the world. A pilot project has been run, applying a first version of the list of filtering terms to the more than 20 million open scholarly documents available. This resulted in approximately 100 000 documents, with relevance to the high north, open and freely available for all. NAROS will thus be a unique source, giving fast and easy access to scholarly documents within its scope. NAROS will be an overlay service, utilizing the pool of openly available scholarly documents. The method of filtering with the use of relevant terms are to our knowledge new, and will be possible to copy for any other thematic scope
