Monitoring of the Upper Ocean Circulation, Transport and Water Masses between Africa and Antarctica

  • General public
Monitoring the density structure between choke point spanning South Africa and Antarctica (12deg E) during austral summer using Expendable Conductivity Depth Temperature (XCTD) probes. XCTDs were operated from moving cargo ships to obtain temperature and salinity profiles in the upper 1000m of the ocean. Using these data vertical structures were prepared to identify frontal characteristics, water mass distribution, geostrophic transport across the choke point. Basin scale features were obtained from satellite sensors and validated with in situ data. Meteorological data were also corroborated with oceanographic features to understand atmosphere-ocean interactions.
