Engaging public audiences in polar science was a focus of NSF's investment in International Polar Year 2007-2009. Because of the technology available today, scientific expeditions during IPY have been captured and shared in ways not possible during previous IPYs. Experts in exhibits, radio, television, film and the web traveled to the field with scientific expeditions sharing real-time and candid views of scientific expeditions in the polar regions as well as developing exhibits, television and radio broadcasts, and downloadable materials that remain available to the world community as a legacy of IPY. Even the classroom teachers who participated in IPY research projects created online journals, photos, videos and sound files that are useful to educators and the public wishing to understand more about polar field research. NSF will highlight the successful partnerships between informal educators and scientific researchers supported during IPY. These efforts leveraged the strengths of both groups to create stimulating educational materials for the general public as well as for teachers, students and professional audiences. NSF remains committed to supporting the link between scientific research and informal science education.
