Gaining Media Coverage from Remote Polar Places: The new German Antarctic Research Station 'Neumayer III' as a Successful Example
- Media
German media reported widely on the construction and opening of the new Antarctic research base 'Neumayer-Station III'. For internal evaluation media coverage by German television, radio and newspapers has been regularly and quantitatively monitored from September 2008 until the end of February 2009. With almost 500 million user contacts during that period, 'Neumayer III' turned out to be the most successful press campaign that has been run by the Alfred Wegener Institute of Polar and Marine Research yet. A key factor of success has been the regular, cost-efficient and timely supply with first-hand information, good photos and regular video footage, provided in line with usual editorial routines. Centerpieces of the campaign have been media cooperation between the Alfred Wegener Institute, the TV producer and internet channel 'realnature.tv', the German TV channel 'Phoenix', and the German Press Agency (dpa). Highlights have been several live connections from Antarctica to major German news shows and the first simulcast from Antarctica in German television during the inauguration of Neumayer-Station III on 20th February, 2009.
