The Antarctic and Southern Ocean are hotspots for climate, sea level rise, biodiversity, global ecosystem functioning and service as well as tourism, international regime development, conservation and questions of heritage. APECS-Sweden in cooperation with the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat (SPRS) brings together early-career polar researchers and Swedish Antarctic researchers to discuss where the research frontiers in their field lie, how to take them further and combine them with those in other disciplines – as well as what is the social relevance of these endeavors. The workshop begins with presentations by three senior researchers followed by a roundtable discussion. After the introduction the senior researchers act as “station managers” in a world café -format workshop. The early-career researchers form three small groups that rotate between three stations discussing their research and thoughts about Antarctic environment, conservation and governance and connecting their ideas and input to those of the previous groups.
After the workshop APECS members are invited to join the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat’s panning workshop on future Swedish Antarctic research in the ALC room at the Geovetarcentrum. The day ends with Polar Pingis where Lina Rasmussen and Julia Kukulies will discuss their research and light refreshments and possibility to play table tennis are offered beginning at 17 the entrance hall.
