CfP AAG 2022: Polar Geography Sessions

NYC & online (25 February - 1 March 2022)

Northern geographies: Arctic, high-latitude, and cold region research and engagements

The Polar Geography Specialty Group seeks papers from human and physical geographers examining Arctic, high-latitude, and cold regions in order to reckon with the rapid and dramatic socioeconomic, geophysical, and environmental changes that the region is experiencing. We welcome scholars employing qualitative and/or quantitative methods, such as ethnography, geovisualization, discourse analysis, and remote sensing. We also seek papers across a range of scales, from specific case studies to more pan-regional approaches, and a range of temporalities, too. Sessions will seek to synthesize research on historical processes in the Arctic and sub-Arctic to present dynamics in order to support efforts to project future change. These sessions will speak to two of AAG 2022's themes, "The Changing North American Continent" and "Climate Justice."

Across these sessions, we hope to encourage discussion and debate about how to work towards more just and sustainable northern communities from the local to international scale. We also aim to stimulate conversations about how to pursue more inclusive research designed and carried out in partnership with rightsholders and stakeholders in a manner that bridges Indigenous and Western ontologies and methodologies.

We welcome both in-person and virtual presentations. Please submit your abstract (250 words or less) to Mia Bennett at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by 18 October at 11:59 PM ET. Accepted presenters will be notified before the AAG abstract submission deadline of 19 October.

There will also be an award for undergraduate and graduate papers. Students must be a member and attending (either virtually or in-person) AAG 2022 to be eligible. More information regarding the awards is forthcoming.

Please also stay tuned for information regarding a social event at the AAG 2022.

The Polar Geography Specialty Group looks forward to seeing you online or in-person in New York next February!
