The first field-school of the International Partnerships for Excellent Education and Research (INTPART) project titled, "Arctic Field Summer Schools: Norway-Canada-USA collaboration" will be organized by University of Tromso (UiT) - the Arctic University of Norway and will convene 15 May-2 June 2017.

The “Arctic Field Summer School” is funded by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) and Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education (SIU), under grant agreement number 261786/H30 (http://cirfa.uit.no/intpart-project-to-cirfa-arctic-field-summer-school).

The project supports research and education collaboration among UiT-the Arctic University of Norway, International Arctic Research Center (IARC) of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), USA and University of Calgary (UC), Canada. Through a series of summer schools, the project will engage graduate students in exploring science questions related to Arctic challenges.

During this first Norwegian Field School, students will participate in a remote sensing and ship-based field school at Svalbard and Tromsø. The course is divided in two closely related segments, starting with a one-week field course on board R/V Lance to the marginal ice zone in and around Svalbard, where the participating students will receive introductory lectures and collect in-situ and remote sensing data to be analyzed in the subsequent segment.

The second week will take place at the Centre for Integrated Remote Sensing and Forecasting for Arctic Operations (CIRFA), located within the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Physics and Technology at UiT-the Arctic University of Norway. This part of the course will cover analysis of data collected in the field and additional archived data. The participating students will have to submit an individual report or an oral presentation at the end of the school, and will be able to earn credits for participation based on an assessment of the work.

The class will be offered as a two-credit University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) summer course and students willing to earn credits need to enroll for the class.

Travel grants (amounts will be determined later) will be issued by IARC to cover round-trip international travel costs from USA to Tromsø, Norway, as well as travel between Tromsø and Svalbard. Accommodation and meals are provided free of cost for the participant on board the ship R/V Lance. All meals and standard university accommodation will be covered during the stay in Tromsø. CIRFA will provide office space and other basic infrastructure at the centre facilities at UiT-the Arctic University of Norway.

Important: This opportunity is open only for US-based graduate students enrolled at US universities.

Please send your 1-page motivation letter that outlines how this course fits into your graduate study and career plans, curriculum vitae and a recommendation letter from your supervisor to Tohru Saito (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
