Snow Microwave Radiative Transfer (SMRT) model training workshop
From Thursday 06 July 2023
To Saturday 08 July 2023
Location Bremerhaven, Germany

SMRT is a passive/radar/altimeter microwave model for seasonal snow and sea-ice developed  in the framework of an ESA project aiming at exploring the role of snow microstructure and unifying the ingredients of existing model/theories (MEMLS, DMRT-QMS, HUT, ...). More information is available on the websitehttp://www.smrt-model.science/. SMRT is available from GitHubhttps://github.com/smrt-model/smrt.

The aim of this 2.5 day workshop is to provide a general introduction to snow microwave modelling and a specific introduction to SMRT. Participants will have an opportunity to learn how to use the SMRT model for different cryospheric environments, sea-ice, terrestrial snow, firn, etc. In particular, lectures, practicals and discussions will cover:

- Snow microstructure and its impact on microwave scattering

- Different electromagnetic theories (IBA, DMRT, SCE) to compute scattering from random media

- Numerous ways to represent a scattering medium, with application to snow, saline ice, fresh ice, ground, rough interfaces, ….

- Methods to solve the radiative transfer equation and the SMRT altimetry extension.

- “Bring your data (or ideas)”. Support will be offered to help participants use SMRT for their own research.

We would like to welcome those of all career and expertise levels. Attendance at the workshop is free but registration will be mandatory and the number of workshop places will be limited to 27 participants. Participants will need to fund their own travel to Bremerhaven, food and accommodation.

For further discussion on SMRT, we will travel to Berlin for IUGG2023 after the workshop !

The application is open until 14th April on the workshop websitehttps://smrt20>23.sciencesconf.org/ and we will confirm place allocations by the 28th April.
