Distributed Acoustic Sensing in the Cryosphere,
Presented by: Dr. Fabian Walter, ETH Zurich

Abstract: Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) dramatically increases seismic sensor coverage, turning kilometer-long fiber optic cables into thousands of seismic sensors. DAS and similar approaches image seismic sources in densely populated cities as well as deep ocean basins, far away from the nearest conventional seismic station. Like in many other disciplines, there is hope that DAS will fill critical monitoring gaps on glaciers, ice sheets and avalanche-prone terrain. This talk will present DAS measurements in the cryosphere, from technical aspects of cable deployment to signal quality and source studies. Given these first experiences, some conclusions of the potential and limitations of this technique may already be drawn.
This is a joint Distributed Acoustic Sensing Research Coordination Network (DAS RCN) and Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Webinar. You can find out more information and sign up for the DAS RCN mailing list here.
If you are new to Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), please watch this primer video by Eileen Martin (Virginia Tech) and Nate Lindsey (FiberSense) before the webinar.
