The new Junior Research Group Ecological Novelty at the University of Goettingen invites applications for a 3-year PhD position on forest dynamics in permafrost regions, starting 1 February 2027.

The project will focus on vegetation dynamics in boreal permafrost landscapes and the interactions and feedback processes between permafrost, vegetation, and carbon, combining numerical modelling with field and Earth observation data. The research questions will be shaped together with the candidate, so modelling, remote-sensing, and ecology backgrounds are all welcome.

We are looking for candidates with an MSc in Physical Geography, Earth System Sciences, Physics, Ecology, or a related field, and a strong quantitative background.
