Join a frontier ERC project exploring how ocean–ice interactions shape Arctic climate — from past transitions to future tipping points.
We invite applications from highly motivated Master students and interns to join the ERC- funded project Into the Blue (i2B). The project is hosted at the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI, Germany), NORCE & Bjerknes Center (Norway), and UiT – The Arctic University of Norway, bringing together leading expertise in Arctic climate and cryosphere research.
The project is funded through a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grant and investigates the role of the ocean–ice–climate system in shaping past and future climate dynamics.

? Project Focus
i2B explores high-resolution (paleo) Earth system modelling, with a particular focus on:
• The Greenland Ice Sheet and Arctic sea ice
• Ocean–ice interactions
• Arctic climate dynamics
• Past climate variability and its relevance for future projections
• Data–model comparisons
• Mechanisms of climate transitions
The overarching theme is:
Understanding the climate of the past to better constrain the climate of the future.
? What We Offer
Students and interns will:
• Analyse cutting-edge Earth system model simulations within the ERC project
• Work with high-resolution climate models including interactive ice sheets
• Contribute to data–model comparison studies
• Develop independent research ideas within the project framework
• Present results at group meetings and international conferences
• Engage in Arctic-focused research in Bergen, Tromsø or Bremerhaven
• Participate in research visits
• Work in a highly international research environment
We provide:
• Access to state-of-the-art modelling infrastructure
• Supervision within an internationally recognized ERC project
• Strong candidates will be fully integrated into ongoing publications and may lead first-author papers.
• Integration into an active and collaborative research network
• We also support competitive applications for mobility and research grants.
