PhD position in radar remote sensing of sea ice dynamics
Sweden
University of Technology in Gothenburg
  • Graduate Position
2026-05-19

This doctoral student position will be based in the Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. The doctoral student project will be one of the first that is funded by the new Swedish research school on polar science SEAL (School of Excellence in Arctic and Antarctic Learning).

The project intends to tackle new challenges emerging from a thinner and more dynamic ice cover in the polar regions and the drive for models with higher resolution. This will be done by improving methods for satellite observations of sea ice drift and deformation. Driving forces for drift and deformation include wind, waves and ocean surface currents. Connections between drift/deformation and forces will be analysed with the aim to generate information that can improve ice charts, weather forecasts and climate predictions. Observations will be based on synthetic aperture radar at multiple frequencies. Validation data will be collected during expeditions to the Arctic Ocean, Antarctica and the Baltic Sea.
