- Graduate Position
The Geospatial Research Institute Toi Hangarau at the University of Canterbury have a scholarship opportunity in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Project background:
Lake-terminating glaciers are among the fastest-retreating ice masses on Earth, yet iceberg calving remains poorly understood. You'll combine high-resolution SAR data, deep learning, and field-based surveys to investigate the links between calving dynamics, terminus buoyancy, and ice velocity at an actively retreating glacier in the New Zealand Southern Alps.
GRI Scholarship includes:
- NZ$35,650 per year
- Full tuition fees
- NZ$4,000 annual research expenses
- 3 years full-time
They are looking for someone with a background in earth or environmental science, an interest in satellite data or coding, and curiosity about glaciers and climate change. Experience with GIS, machine learning, or remote sensing is a bonus — not a requirement.
Closing date: 29 May 2026 at 5:00 pm NZ time. Late applications will not be considered.
