CPOM Data Scientist & Research Fellow
Newcastle, UK
Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling
  • Research Scientist

The Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) are hiring a 4-year Polar Data Scientist and a 2-year Research Fellow working on the ESA-NASA IMBIE project. CPOM are the UK’s national capability science provider in observation and modelling of Earth’s land and marine ice.  We are hiring these new posts to support our work on land ice satellite remote sensing. Northumbria is the UK’s University of the Year and is ranked 2ndin the UK for research power in Geography and Environmental Science. We are based in Newcastle, with outposts in London and Amsterdam for those who prefer life in the slow lane. If you would like to work in a thriving, friendly research environment, then we would love to hear from you!

Data Scientist:  We are seeking applications for a four-year position in data science of the polar ice sheets. The successful candidate will work with CPOM in the Department of Geography & Environmental Sciences at Northumbria University. The project will focus on developing estimates of Antarctic and Greenland ice sheet elevation change from satellite altimetry, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council. The candidate will produce operational estimates of ice sheet elevation change using the state-of-the-art CPOM satellite altimetry software system, maintain the supply of primary and ancillary data sets, and contribute to the implementation of new technical advances into the CPOM software system. The position requires a degree in computing, physics, mathematics, or a related numerate discipline, along with experience in software engineering and data science, and experience in scientific programming or satellite altimetry is highly desirable. The post will commence in early to mid-2023, with the targeted starting date of 1st June 2023. Further detail can be found here

IMBIE Research Fellow:  We are seeking a candidate for a two-year postdoctoral research position in satellite remote sensing of the polar ice sheets. The successful candidate will work with CPOM and contribute to the ESA-NASA Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise (IMBIE), which CPOM leads. The project will involve developing estimates of Antarctic and Greenland ice sheet mass balance, comparing and aggregating data from satellite altimetry, satellite gravimetry, and the input output method. The ideal candidate should have a PhD in physics or mathematics, or in a related, numerate discipline such as glaciology, geophysics, or climate science, with experience in satellite remote sensing of the cryosphere and scientific programming. The role requires working alongside Dr. Ines Otosaka and Professor Andrew Shepherd at Northumbria, and the person will have the freedom to focus on goals of specific interest within the broad remit of the project. The position will commence in early to mid-2023, and the deadline for applications is 2nd May 2023. Further details can be found here
