The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), the INTERACT Station Manager`s Forum and the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) have developed the INTERACT Practical Field Guide for scientists - a pocket guide that is designed to be taken into the field. The INTERACT Practical Field Guide contains information on best practices and specific safety tips for fieldwork in the Arctic.
Its eight chapters address general safety guidelines; communication; safety during transport and in the field; weather, terrain and wildlife, codes of conduct; local and traditional knowledge; and emergency preparedness and supplements the INTERACT Fieldwork Planning Handbook.
The INTERACT Practical Field Guide is printed on waterproof paper and has special features such as a plastic pocket, a wind chill factor table, first aid basics, and space to add relevant contacts.
The book has been developed and written by early career scientists, station managers and experienced safety professionals, thus reflecting the views of both new explorers and those with years of experience. We therefore hope that the book can be an inspirational source for early career and more senior scientists providing in-depth knowledge and handy tips for fieldwork planning in the Arctic and other cold regions of the world.
The INTERACT Practical Field Guide can be downloaded for free here on the APECS website as well as on the INTERACT website. Printed copies are available upon request through INTERACT and the APECS office (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
