Sisters to Savoonga - sustaining educational outreach
  • Educators, Teachers
Developing on-going collaborations between Arctic indigenous village schools and traditional lower latitude schools can be one of the next steps for educational outreach. This type of collaboration builds upon the intense and directed outreach from the teacher-at-sea programs and school visits by researchers to integrate polar education naturally across the curriculum in a more sustained way. By including all subject areas and grade levels, students will be exposed to polar education throughout their elementary years. Such a collaboration is developing between two schools, one in a St. Lawrence Island Yupik community, Savoonga, in the Bering Sea, and the other, an elementary school in Maryland, outside Washington DC. Researchers and teachers are developing relationships to broaden the transfer of knowledge to both schools.
