Results of the International Polar Year 2007/2008. How to Attract Young People's Attention to the Problems of the Arctic Region
- Educators, Teachers
Problems of the Arctic concern, to one extent or another, all of the Earth's population. And how can we attract attention to them? Only by means of outreach activities. And such activities are to be carried among children and young people, in the first turn, because they will face these problems and make efforts to solve them. But the modern youth is not to be interested by scientific calculations and models. Therefore the knowledge acquired by the scientists needs to be popularised. We must make the Arctic research and its issues interesting for the youth. In Russia, and particularly in St. Petersburg, we tried to do it by means of a geographic Olympiad called Face the North'2009. It was started in September 2009 and was organised by the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia in cooperation with the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute and the Russian State Hydrometeorological University. More than 500 pupils from different schools of St. Petersburg discussed the problems of the northern region of Russia with the deepest interest.
