Fellowships for Science Journalists
- Media
This project brings 10 mid-career working journalists to Toolik Field Station and gives them hands on training in collecting and analyzing data and presenting their work to a mini symposium at the station (80 people). Through the program, journalists gain a new understanding of the feedbacks involved in arctic climate change. They have produced some high profile articles in the Economist, Nature, NPR, Audubon magazine, and more. The surprise in the project was that scientists at different stages in their career react to journalists in different ways. They did a social science project from here, interviewing the scientists to determine how they respond to the journalist. Interactions are viewed differently from each group. The journalists who participated are developing interests in science topics and pursuing further reports on the matter.
