March 26 University at Institut des sciences de la mer, Université du Québec a Rimouski (ISMER/UQAR), Canada

Presentation organised by Jack Kauw about the first crossing of Spitsbergen in 1896. Him and 5 students, used that old book of Sir Conway (with as title: The first crossing of Spitsbergen ;-)) as a travel guide and hiked the same long route in 2010.
A lot of scenery was exactly the same, but the on-land glaciers changed a lot: some became smaller and less impressive, others much larger. Jack will show pictures from 120 years ago and from the same spot in 2010.

With International Polar Week taking place this week (March 21-29, 2015), USAPECS is holding a number of events to spread awareness about the world's polar regions and shed light on the recent activities of polar researchers based in the United States. A few USAPECS board members led by Chelsea Thompson (USAPECS Project Lead) are planning to submit a request to do a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything). This is an online event where anyone can post a question in real time and have it be answered. In addition, on Twitter, USAPECS members will be using the hashtag #askUSAPECS to share what they're up to. Several will be live-tweeting from the field, so check it out!

Polar Vortex Event Toronto: Expedition to the end of the World documentary and polar 'tastes'

An evening of exploring polar ecology, history and culture.

Host APECS member Carol Devine recently co-wrote a food and cultural history book based on an ecological expedition she led there, The Antarctic Book of Cooking and Cleaning (release HarperCollins Mar 5, 2015) She's introducing an award-winning Arctic film, Expedition to the End of the World during a special polar night in Toronto at the Revue Cinema Wed Mar 25 645pm, 400 Roncesvalles Avenue, Toronto.

Expedition to the End of the World (Director - Danick Dencik, Denmark) a grand and adventurous journey of discovery to the last white areas of the map. On a schooner packed with artists, scientists and ambitions worthy of Noah or Columbus, we set off for the end of the world: the rapidly melting massifs of NE Greenland. An epic journey where the brave sailors on board encounter polar bear nightmares, Stone Age playgrounds and entirely new species...confront[ing] existential questions of life... (C) Official Site

Hear a few words on Arctic journeys with Adventure Canada exploring culture, history and more, win door prizes and sample polar 'flavours' hand-made locally, recipes by chef and visual artist Wendy Trusler, my cowriter from The Antarctic Book of Cooking and Cleaning (HarperCollins May 2015). The Hollywood Soapbox calls Expedition to the End of the World.

"A Jacques Cousteau film mated with a Wes Anderson flick...Mother Earth has never looked more majestic"

Variety Magazine calls it an "audience-friendly, atmospheric work [that] could be remade as a thriller, although that's really what it is already."
