Studying paleoclimates is key to better understand climate mechanisms and better predict future climate changes. Ice cores is one the natural archive scientists can analysis to reconstruct past climates.

A new drilling is currently taking place in Antarctica, to extract an ice core containing at its bottom ice as old as 1.5 millions years. This European project is called Beyond EPICA. To have the needed tools to interpret this new ice core and the precious data it contains, another European network was set up: DEEPICE project, funding 15 PhD projects in ice core sciences.
