The Franco-German Research School “Perceiving Arctic Change – Climate, Society and Sustainability (PACCSS)" funded by the Franco-German University Saarbrücken, offers 12 open places for outstanding young scientists (Ph.Ds) in the topical field of Arctic studies, starting in October 2021.

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research Bremerhaven,Germany, and the UVSQ / Université Paris Saclay, France, provide a joined and unique research environment, bridging the gap between traditional disciplines. PACCSS combines natural science, humanities and anthropology in order to understand and decipher the complex Arctic environment under change and pressure, both for indigenous people, the ecosystem as well as the climate system as key region for global climate change.

Areas of study include:
➢ climate and paleoclimate dynamics (e.g., earth system modelling, atmosphere, trace gases)
➢ geology (e.g., permafrost)
➢ glaciology (e.g., ice core analysis)
➢ anthropology
➢ literature and cultural studies
➢ geopolitics and many more

Accompanying courses in all associated disciplines contain a great deal of necessary technical and specialised areas: specialists from the institutes as well as national and international collaboration partners will give lectures about fundamental concepts of the related research fields, and provide
knowledge through expert courses on special themes. Students of PACCSS will be given the opportunity to attend conferences and summer schools, excursions, as well as visits at international partner institutes. Furthermore, the PhD-program includes compulsory courses on presentation techniques, communication and scientific management.

PACCSS is a complementary offer to POLMAR graduate school and embedded in the POLMAR curriculum. The Franco-German Research School PACCSS invites suitable candidates to apply for a structured PhD education in our transdisciplinary PhD program which is going to start on 1 October 2021. Applicants with a Master degree or equivalent qualification in Physics, Geosciences, Geology, Mathematics, Humanities or related fields will be considered. The online application will accept submissions with deadline 30 August 2021. Successful candidates will be notified in September 2021. Start of the research school will be in October 2021 with an official inauguration ceremony during the VIII. Gateway to the Arctic Workshop in Potsdam, Germany.
