The work of one of APECS’ Project Groups (PGs) was presented at the 17th Annual Earth System and Space Science Poster Conference on December 8 in Boulder, CO (US). Between 2018 and 2021, the “IPCC group review” PG organized six group reviews of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports.
The poster was entitled “Participation of Early Career Researchers in group reviews of the latest IPCC Reports: Outcomes and lessons learned”. Marta Moreno Ibáñez (one of the PG leaders of the “IPCC group review” PG) presented the poster in person at the conference. The analysis of the outcomes of these group reviews has been performed by a large group of ECRs. The poster showcased the work of APECS and its partners (MRI, PAGES ECN, PYRN and YESS) in organizing the IPCC group reviews, and showed that ECRs can significantly contribute to the peer-reviewing effort. In particular, the poster provided a summary of the IPCC group reviews and showed the different stages of the group review process. In addition, the poster presented some outcomes of these group reviews, such as the number of comments sent to the IPCC, as well as a summary of the feedback from the participants, which has been very positive.
It was encouraging to see that several people showed interest in the poster presentation. Marta walked them through the poster and answered their questions, providing all the details about the stages of the process and the main challenges. The high number of participants and high number of comments submitted to the IPCC were some of the things that people found most surprising about this project.
This poster presentation is among the activities that APECS and partners have undertaken to promote peer reviewing by ECRs. Presenting the poster at the ESSS conference has provided a great opportunity to show that ECRs have made a valuable contribution to the peer reviewing of the IPCC reports.
