The APECS Workshop at the Arctic Science Summit Week 2022 project group has organized hybrid sessions on 28 March 2022. To join, participants need to register for online or in-person attendance at ASSW. Online participation is free of charge, and the in-person registration price is reduced 50% for early career researchers and indigenous participants.

Workshop #1: The Rising Field of AI in Polar Research
This panel will feature young scholars from the APECS Remote Sensing Group as well as members from the Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System. The session will start with a general introduction to the field of AI in polar research, and will discuss the whys and hows, as well as some of the exciting new developments that we can expect in this field. Academics from SIOS will share how AI can address specific and otherwise unmet challenges in the Arctic (e.g. shortfalls in navigation and scalability) and will share where the future of AI can take us as we look forward.
Workshop #2: Science communication: Let’s talk science!
This workshop will focus on polar science communication. Given global situations like the pandemic and climate change, we as APECS members believe it is more important than ever to disclose quality scientific information to the public. In this session we will invite different scientific disseminators to talk about their work. This workshop aims to motivate the Early Career Scientist to be part of this movement and take part in science communication events.
Workshop #3: Panel discussion about different career paths in Arctic science
During this session a moderator will interview several senior researchers in Arctic science to showcase the different stages of their career. We will address the different periods of their research career, focusing on their early days, to serve as an inspiration to the workshop attendees. From APECS we believe that sharing these experiences can be of great interest and inspiration for early career scientists. Also, we would like to address both the achievements of our researchers and the difficult moments along their professional career, providing the audience with a transparent vision about the scientific profession. We will end the session with a round of questions where all attendees can address our guest researchers.
Workshop #4: Geopolitics of the Arctic: Turkey’s polar interests
Turkey is not an Arctic state by its geography, but it is by its regional interest. This session will explore some of Turkey’s interests in the poles, both North and South, to understand how Turkey contributes to the global network of polar science. Speakers from Turkey’s Polar Research Institute will focus on logistics of expeditions, environmental legislation, and research outreach, all highlighting this Mediterranean state’s polar links.
Arctic Science Summit Week 2022 is being held in Tromsø, Norway from 26 March - 1 April and is organised by the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) and co-hosted by UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the Norwegian Polar Institute, and the Research Council of Norway.
