The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), PAst Global ChangES Early-Career Network (PAGES-ECN), Permafrost Young Research Network (PYRN), and Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) community successfully organized the group review of the Second Order Draft (SOD) of Working Group I (WGI) contribution to the IPCC 6^th Assessment Report (AR6) by early career scientists. A recently published article shows that these group reviews were a success in terms of the experience of ECRs and their contribution to the IPCC review process. The authors argue that including a diverse group of ECR reviewers can help produce more balanced scientific reports since they bring new perspectives:

The Brazilian National Committee of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists – APECS-Brazil – along with the Superior School of Defense (ESD), held the APECS-Brazil 2024 Symposium: 40 Years of Brazil in Antarctica from July 17th to 19th in the ESD auditorium in Brasília/DF.

We are now inviting all APECS members to join our activities as members of our Project Groups for the new APECS term starting 1 October! This is one of the easiest ways to get more involved in APECS and to contribute in a way that is best suited to your interests and skills. Hosting meetings, taking notes, research, writing, graphic design, social media posting, sending emails - these are just a few examples of the ways you can contribute to APECS project groups.

In this online seminar, Arctic PASSION is introducing its Air Quality Forecast for Arctic Communities (AURORAE) Service: https://aurorae.azurewebsites.net/. The AURORAE service is a web interface to monitor the air quality of the North European countries on a daily basis. It is providing a two-day forecast of particulate matter concentrations developed through an Artificial Intelligence (AI) model.

The  website offers an interactive map showing air pollution concentration and near-real-time forecast at hourly resolution for over 100 sites in Northern Europe, highlighting projected air quality conditions at each station. A daily bulletin reporting the forecast for all stations will be also released on a daily basis to provide a broad overview of air pollution status for Northern communities. 

The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) is looking for a new team member in the International Directorate, which is based at the UiT University Library. APECS is an international and interdisciplinary organization for early career individuals with interests in polar and alpine regions and the wider cryosphere, and is jointly hosted by UiT, the Norwegian Polar Institute and the Fram Centre. We provide networking and career development opportunities and promote polar education and outreach. We are looking for someone that can work part-time on an hourly basis for at least six months (ideally one year), starting in September 2024. The working hours are flexible, so this job can fit alongside other commitments. It is a great step for those on a polar career path!

The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), the Polar Science Early Career Community Office (PSECCO), and the Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP) Programme are pleased to announce that a Polar Early Career World Summit will be held in Boulder, Colorado, March 22-24, 2025.

APECS Denmark and The Danish Meteorological Institute are organising an early career event on proposal writing in Copenhagen on 2 September 2024. The workshop will be held at the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), Room MC10-MC11 (ground floor), Sankt Kjelds Plads 11, 2100 Copenhagen and start and 13:00 CEST.

The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Open Science Conference (OSC) 2024 “Antarctic Science: Crossroads for a New Hope” will be held in Pucón, Chile from 19-23 August 2024. The conference will feature a comprehensive programme of plenary lectures, mini-symposia, parallel sessions, panel discussions, and posters. APECS is linked to four workshops (additional information below) and a number of presentations at the conference. APECS President José Queirós will attend and will represent APECS at the Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) program's Scientific Steering Group meeting. In addition, APECS provided a report for the XXXVIII SCAR Delegates meeting, which APECS Vice-President Hugo Guímaro will digitally attend as an observer. 

The APECS DEI Project Group (Leeger et al.) has a poster in session 48 - Is Antarctic science ready to help tackle urgent global issues? Perspectives on strengthening equitable science communities. This poster covers the group’s recent activities, specifically the workshop series jointly held by APECS, the SCAR EDI Action Group and Thrive Lifeline; the posted is entitled “The role of Early Career Scientists in Promoting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI): the APECS DEI Project Group as Example”.

The goal of this program is to connect early-career Arctic and European youth aged 18-35 with mentors across Arctic communities in the fields of Arctic policy development, advocacy, and communications. The aim is to provide youth with the experiences and tools they need to effectively advocate for policy changes on issues important to the livelihoods of youth in the Arctic and in Europe.

The Polar Early Career World Summit (PECWS) 2025 is collaboratively organized by the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), the Polar Science Early Career Community Office (PSECCO), and the Early Career Ocean Professionals Programme (ECOP Programme). The PECWS 2025 Organizing Committee is seeking enthusiastic polar early career scientists to join the PECWS 2025 Planning Team to help plan and steer the summit’s activities.
