SUMMARY:Landscapes Live Seminars 2021
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:
We are very pleased to announce our next online Landscapes
Live seminar by Simon Mudd (University of Edinburgh) that wil
l occur this week on Thursday March 25th at 3pm GMT (4pm C
ET/8am PDT/11am EDT).

The title of Simon's talk is: <stron
g>If you don’t like the stream power law, wait until you get a load of
what we do on hillslopes

Abstract: In
this presentation I will explain how I don’t understand anything about hill
slope morphology. I was drawn to this topic 20 years ago because of some el
egant equations that predicted hilltop convexity. It made me feel like an i
ntellectual to say “did you know hillslopes can be described by the same eq
uations that describe chemical and thermal diffusion?” Except they can’t. I
will show lots of pretty hillshade images of hillslopes that are
not behaving. I will also talk about other people’s studies that have
tried to quantify just how wrong the diffusion model of hillslopes is. You
should tune in to the talk because I might say how great your paper is. Als
o I will show how you can spend 20 years trying to match up topographic obs
ervations to theory and feel like you understand the system less than you d
id when you were a 1st year PhD student.

You can regi
ster in advance for this Zoom meeting here: <a href="https://us02web.zoom.u

Landscapes Live seminar series will have a break before we
start with our exciting spring lineup from May 6th 2021 (informati
on to follow).

Previous talks are available on the web
