SUMMARY:Landscapes Live Seminars 2021
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:We are very pleased to announce our next online Landscapes Live seminar by
Simon Mudd (University of Edinburgh) that will occur this week on Thursday
 March 25th at 3pm GMT (4pm CET/8am PDT/11am EDT). \nThe title of Simon's ta
lk is: If you don’t like the stream power law, wait until you get a load of
what we do on hillslopes\nAbstract: In this presentation I will explain ho
w I don’t understand anything about hillslope morphology. I was drawn to th
is topic 20 years ago because of some elegant equations that predicted hill
top convexity. It made me feel like an intellectual to say “did you know hi
llslopes can be described by the same equations that describe chemical and
thermal diffusion?” Except they can’t. I will show lots of pretty hillshade
images of hillslopes that are not behaving. I will also talk about other p
eople’s studies that have tried to quantify just how wrong the diffusion mo
del of hillslopes is. You should tune in to the talk because I might say ho
w great your paper is. Also I will show how you can spend 20 years trying t
o match up topographic observations to theory and feel like you understand
the system less than you did when you were a 1st year PhD student.\nYou can
register in advance for this Zoom meeting here: https://us02web.zoom.us/me
 eting/register/tZMtcOqupjgvG9e_8EtvoVQbxFfF-R17pPh5.\nAfter registering, yo
u should receive a confirmation email containing information about joining
the meeting. We will also post the Zoom link for this meeting on the semina
 r website: <a href="https://osur.univ-rennes1.fr/LandscapesLive/" target="_
 blank" rel="noopener">https://osur.univ-rennes1.fr/LandscapesLive/</a>.\nFo
llowing this talk, the Landscapes Live seminar series will have a break bef
ore we start with our exciting spring lineup from May 6th 2021 (information
to follow). \nPrevious talks are available on the website (https://osur.un
