SUMMARY:The Synoptic Arctic Survey Webinar, A New Arctic Emerging
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:The  (SAS) is still going strong despite the situation with Covid-19. On th
is occasion, we would like to bring you up to speed on the status of the Ar
ctic Ocean and of SAS and hereby invite you to join the Synoptic Arctic Sur
 vey’s fall Webinar “A New Arctic Emerging” on September 2, 15:00 – 17:00 (U
TC +2).\nThis Webinar will address the Arctic Ocean in response present and
future climate change with focus on marine physical, biogeochemical, and e
cological processes, and emphasizes the underlying question behind <a href=

esent state and major ongoing transformations of the Arctic marine system?
\nThere will be three solicited talks with room for questions and discussio
ns:\n\n -  Dr. Andrey Proshutinsky (WHOI) - Freshwater in the Beaufort Gyre
; accumulation, release processes, and their influence on Arctic circulatio
n and climate.\nDr. Proshutinsky is a physical oceanographer at the Woods H
ole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and has worked with observations and m
odeling of the Arctic Ocean since 1976. He is PI of the AOMIP and FAMOS pro
jects, and since 2003 leads and participates in the Arctic Ocean Network (A
ON) projects exploring the Beaufort Gyre climate system. \n \n - Dr. Ryan W
oosley (MiT) - Freshening of the western Arctic and the impacts on anthropo
genic carbon uptake potential.\nDr. Woolsey is a marine physical chemist at
the Department of Earth Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at MIT. His res
earch focuses on the carbon cycle and ocean acidification, with a special i
nterest in uptake and storage of anthropogenic carbon in the ocean over dec
adal time scales.\n \n - Prof. Marit Reigstad (UiT) - Understanding the dri
ving mechanisms and potential fate of increased primary production in the A
rctic.\nProf. Reigstad is a marine ecologist at the Arctic University of No
rway (UiT) who has worked with marine research in the Arctic since 2000. Sh
e has led several multidisciplinary Arctic projects and expeditions, and is
currently the PI of the Nansen Legacy. The Webinar will take place in GoTo
Meeting, and moderated by Øyvind Paasche, the Chair of SAS’ Scientific Stee
