SUMMARY:Polar Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Please join us remotely this Thursday (5/21) at 2:00 pm for the next Polar
Seminar! Our speaker will be Dr. Twila Moon from the National Snow and Ice
Data Center (NSIDC). She will be presenting a talk entitled "Rapid reconfig
uration of the Greenland Ice Sheet under climate change ".  Please register
for the meeting using this Zoom link (https://ucsd.zoom.us/meeting/registe
 r/tJ0odOmhrT8oH92fDnCxg0EUqYG-wcAqj0i2). Abstract:\n\nOver the last 30 year
s, the Greenland Ice Sheet has transitioned from a state of near balance to
substantial and sustained ice loss. Greenland is now one of the top contri
butors to global sea level rise, and the added freshwater to the ocean is a
lso influencing regional ocean properties and circulation and local ecosyst
ems. In this talk, Dr. Twila Moon will explore the now multi-decadal record
of rapid ice sheet change, including widespread retreat and more complex r
esponses in velocity and dynamics. She’ll discuss the overlapping processes
that are driving increased melt on the ice sheet surface and at the ice-oc
ean interface, with many of those processes further amplifying the ice shee
t response to climate. This rapid reconfiguration of the ice sheet is drama
tically changing the Greenland coastal margin and may serve as an important
proxy for considering the character of past and future ice sheet loss.  \n
