DESCRIPTION:
Please join us remotely this Thursday (5/21
) at 2:00 pm for the next Polar Seminar! Our spe
aker will be Dr. Twila Moon from the National Sn
ow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). She will be presenting a talk entitled "<st
rong>Rapid reconfiguration of the Greenland Ice Sheet under climate change<
/strong> ". Please register for the meeting using <a href="https

trong>

Over the last 30 years, the Greenland Ice Sheet has t
ransitioned from a state of near balance to substantial and sustained
ice loss. Greenland is now one of the top contributors to global sea l
evel rise, and the added freshwater to the ocean is also influenc
ing regional ocean properties and circulation and local ecosystems. In
this talk, Dr. Twila Moon will explore the now multi-decadal rec
ord of rapid ice sheet change, including widespread retreat and more c
omplex responses in velocity and dynamics. She’ll discuss the ove
rlapping processes that are driving increased melt on the ice sheet su
rface and at the ice-ocean interface, with many of those processes fur
ther amplifying the ice sheet response to climate. This rapid rec
onfiguration of the ice sheet is dramatically changing the Greenland c
oastal margin and may serve as an important proxy for considering
the character of past and future ice sheet loss. <
