The Changing Arctic is a series of Nordic-French seminars addressing key
Arctic issues in the field of research, and taking place during 2016 in De
nmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

the French Embassy, together with the FRAM High North Research Centre on Cl
imate and the Environment and the University of Tromsø - the Arctic Univers
ity of Norway, are pleased to invite you to the workshop “Environment and G
overnance”
The Arctic region is undergoing rapid transformations due
to global warming. Its natural resources attract various kinds of industrie
s, from fisheries to renewable energy; while indigenous communities are fac
ing socio-economical changes. Protecting local cultures and preserving arct
ic ecosystems requires a deep understanding of the impact of human activiti
es as well as an efficient governance across the whole region. Therefore, r
esearch issues concerning adaptation to climate change and resources manage
ment will be discussed, with a particular focus on the indigenous participa
tion in the construction of a
sustainable Arctic, through their tradit
ional knowledge and their political role.
Participants have the possib
ility to present their research with a poster or a short presentation.
A public conference will take place after the seminar: « Governance and traditional ecological knowledge in the Arctic : towards adaptation to a global change », presented by Marie Roué (National Museum of Natural History, Paris).
