SUMMARY:2020 Polar Technology Conference
LOCATION:Boulder\, Colorado\, USA
DESCRIPTION:
The Polar Technology Conference (PTC) was a
small, but impactful meeting held annually from 2005–2016, which created sp
ace for polar scientists, technology developers, and technology users to sh
are technology needs and discoveries. The absence of this opportunity for p
olar people to connect has resulted in reduced connectivity and collaborati
on within the broader polar science community. The National Science Foundat
ion’s Office of Polar Programs has responded to this need with support to r
esume the PTC as a biennial meeting.

Planning for the next PTC is und
erway in partnership with ARCUS and a ten-member, multidisciplinary Organiz
ing Committee. The 2020 meeting will be held in Boulder, Colorado during 10
–12 March at the University of Colorado’s Sustainability, Energy and Enviro
nment Community (SEEC) building. This interdisciplinary c
onference is intended to provide an opportunity for technical and theoretic
al exchange on challenges impeding polar research and field operations. Com
munity input is crucial to ensure that technological infrastructure investm
ents are efficient, satisfy science drivers, and meet field requirements. T
he conference will address approaches to working and studying in the polar
regions, including: terrestrial, marine, atmospheric, and social science di
sciplines; autonomous instrumentation; observation platforms; and all level
s of logistical support.

The goal of the meeting is to link experts i
n polar science and technology development to discuss current technological
resources for polar research and identify barriers to research and applica
tion of technology for problems unique to polar regions. The conference aim
s to: (1) identify and define priorities using bottom-up community feedback
to enhance polar science through technological advances; (2) scope out are
as where research and development (R&D) projects could deliver new tech
nology to meet scientific or logistical user needs and identify where new t
echnology would benefit from field trial; (3) increase awareness of current
funding calls appropriate for technical or R&D projects and provide in
put to funding agencies on effective support of technology-related projects
for polar research; and (4) build on past PTCs to create a community of pr
actice for future dialogue between the users, manufacturers, and developers
of technology used in polar research. Science topics are anticipated to in
clude science drivers, power systems, instrumentation, communications, data
access and sharing, and overarching integrative technology.

Organize
rs welcome abstracts for oral and poster presentations that address one or
more of the six conference themes and topics:

Science Drivers,</
li>
Power Systems,

Instrumentation,

Communications,

Data Access and Sharing, and

Overarching and Integrative Techno
logy.

There is no registration fee for the PTC. Registration is
limited to 100 participants, and will be first-come, first-served. Present
ing authors of submitted abstracts will be given priority registrat
ion until Friday, 24 January 2020. Submitters will receive an emai
l confirmation that contains a link to the priority conference registration
form. General registration will open for all attendees on Friday, 24 Janua
ry and close either on 9 March 2020 or when the conference has reached capa
city.

A call for abstracts and registration information is forthcomin
g. For more information on the conference, please visit <a href="https
