SUMMARY:The Role of Universities in Addressing Societal Challenges and Fostering Democracy: Inclusion, Migration, and Education for Citizenship
LOCATION:Akureyri\, Iceland
DESCRIPTION:The public and democratic role of universities has become an increasingly r
elevant topic in recent years in light of social, political and economic de
velopments, as well as changes in media and communication. At the same time
, democratic societies in Europe are paying increasing attention to the mob
ilities of individuals within and outside the boundaries of their nation-st
ates. While we observe intensified securitization and the rise of anti-immi
gration sentiment in Europe, civic movements of resistance also flourish ac
ross the continent. With this conference, we aim to steer the discourse tow
ards more constructive and rational discussions on migration and higher edu
cation in a healthy democracy.\nThis event seeks to bring together papers t
hat address these and other conceptual and practical concerns and that deve
lop new critical understandings of the role of universities in fostering de
mocracy and ad-dressing migration and other societal changes; that aim to r
each a broader dialogue between university and multicultural society; and t
hat establish discussions on migration and mobilities between diverse commu
nities in academia and the public sector. We therefore welcome papers that
open the boundaries of thinking about migration, democracy and the role of
universities and include but are not limited to the following themes:\n\n -
Civic responsibility of universities and institutions\n - Normative concep
tions of universities and democracy\n - Democracy and educational processes
at the university\n - Challenges to the university in contemporary democra
 cies\n - Universities and neoliberalism\n - Citizenship and immigration\n -
Universities, knowledge and democracy in a time of rising populism\n - Int
egration, adult education and immigrants' acquisition of the host country l
 anguage\n - Identities and communities\n - Relationships between migrants a
nd their host countries\n - Migration in small states and rural areas\n - M
 igration and multiculturalism\n - Socio-economic policies\n - Migration and
activism\n - Educational practicesThe conference is organized within the f
rame of the following projects: Inclusive Societies? The integration of Imm
igrants in Iceland, led by Markus Meckl, vice-lead of the UArctic Thematic
 Network on Arctic Migration (https://www.uarctic.org/organization/thematic-
networks/arctic-migration/) and Unnur Dís Skaptadóttir; Universities and De
mocracy: A critical analysis of the civic role and function of universities
in a democracy, led by Anna Ólafsdóttir and Sigurður Kristinsson; Lingua+:
Innovative host-country language learning through socio-cultural inclusion
and empathy, led by Zane Brikovska; REMix: The university as an advocate f
or responsible education about migration in Europeand APELE: Accreditation
of prior experiential learning in European Universities, led by Markus Meck
