The public and democratic role of universities has become an increasingl y relevant topic in recent years in light of social, political and economic developments, as well as changes in media and communication. At the same t ime, democratic societies in Europe are paying increasing attention to the mobilities of individuals within and outside the boundaries of their nation -states. While we observe intensified securitization and the rise of anti-i mmigration sentiment in Europe, civic movements of resistance also flourish across the continent. With this conference, we aim to steer the discourse towards more constructive and rational discussions on migration and higher education in a healthy democracy.
This event seeks to bring together papers that address these and other conceptual and practical concerns and t hat develop new critical understandings of the role of universities in fost ering democracy and ad-dressing migration and other societal changes; that aim to reach a broader dialogue between university and multicultural societ y; and that establish discussions on migration and mobilities between diver se communities in academia and the public sector. We therefore welcome pape rs that open the boundaries of thinking about migration, democracy and the role of universities and include but are not limited to the following theme s:

The in tegration of Immigrants in Iceland, led by Markus Meckl, vice-lead of the UArctic Thematic Network on Arctic Migration and Unnur Dís Skaptadóttir; Universities and Democracy: A critical ana lysis of the civic role and function of universities in a democracy, l ed by Anna Ólafsdóttir and Sigurður Kristinsson; Lingua+: Innovati ve host-country language learning through socio-cultural inclusion and empa thy, led by Zane Brikovska; REMix: The university as an advoc ate for responsible education about migration in Europeand AP ELE: Accreditation of prior experiential learning in European Universities< /em>, led by Markus Meckl.

The deadline f or registration is February 10th, 2020. The regular conference fee is 25.000 ISK (ca. 145 EUR) and the fee for students is 10.000 ISK (ca. 70 EUR). The fee includes lunch and a conference dinner. Details about regist ration will be included in your acceptance notification email.
Prior to the conference, a Ph.D. workshop “Conceptualizing integration: social in clusion and exclusion in diverse and multicultural societies” will take pla ce on April 1, 2020. Students are asked to submit their applications in res ponse to a separate call. Participants accepted for the workshop are exempt from the conference fee.
