SUMMARY:Workshop on the importance of calving for the mass budget of Arctic glaciers
LOCATION:Sopot\, Poland
DESCRIPTION:The Polish Centre for Polar Studies will host a scientific seminar on the "
Importance of calving for the mass budget of Arctic glaciers" with focus on
ice mass loss at fronts of tidewater glaciers in a Pan-Arctic scale in the
seaside resort Sopot, Poland, 15 - 17 October 2016\nThe purpose of the mee
ting is to:\n- assess the current knowledge on ice mass loss at fronts of A
rctic tidewater glaciers;\n- provide a consistent description of methodolog
ies and terminologies so that inter-comparison between Arctic regions will
be more feasible;\n- consider estimation of discharge for regions where the
y currently do not exist;\n- assess the importance of frontal mass loss for
the general mass budget of glaciers in different Arctic regions.\nThe semi
nar will be hosted and financially supported by the Centre for Polar Studie
s - University of Silesia and Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sci
ences, Poland under the umbrella and with support of the International Arct
ic Science Committee (IASC), through its Network on Arctic Glaciology, and
the Committee of Polar Research Polish Academy of Sciences.\nParticipation:
\nThe seminar will bring together invited experts on Arctic calving glacier
s and mass balance (ca. 20 people) and is open to everyone interested in th
ese issues. The total number of participants is limited to 40 persons.\nFou
r - five working session are planned with 1-2 invited introductory talks an
d longer time slot for discussion during each. Uninvited presentations are
not expected. Nevertheless, brief interventions on methods and regional dat
 a/results (up to 5 min.) could be possible.\nExpected seminar outcome:\nA r
eport with recommendations for further coordinated activity and a sketch of
an overview paper(s) on existing knowledge about frontal ablation and dyna
mic discharge and their contribution to the mass balance of Arctic glaciers
.\nFor more information about the workshop read below or visit the website
of the IASC Network on Arctic Glaciology at nag.iasc.info/workshop (http://
 nag.iasc.info/workshop)\nAdditional information\nRegistration is September
15, 2016:\nEveryone intending to attend the seminar is asked to submit shor
