SUMMARY:MOSAiC School 2019
LOCATION:Arctic
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climat
e (MOSAiC) (https://www.mosaic-expedition.org/), will be the first year-aro
und expedition exploring the coupled Arctic climate system. It has been des
igned by an international consortium of leading polar research institutions
under the umbrella of the International Arcti
c Science Committee (IASC), led by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmho
ltz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) (https://www.awi.de/), Arctic and Antarctic Research Institu
te (AARI) and the University of Colorado, Cooperative Institute for Res
earch in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) (https://cires.colorado.edu/).\n\nR
esearch Vessel (RV) Polarstern will spend 350 days (September 2019 until Se
ptember 2020) frozen into the drifting Arctic sea ice. 300 scientists will
investigate the Arctic climate processes that couple the atmosphere, ocean,
sea ice, bio-geochemistry and ecosystem. The results of MOSAiC will enhanc
e the understanding of the regional and global consequences of Arctic clima
te change and sea-ice loss, and improve weather and climate predictions.\nD
uring the first leg of the expedition, the MOSAiC partners and the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS
) work together to offer the MOSAiC School 2019 on board of the support
icebreaker RV Akademik Fedorov.\nDuration of the MOSAiC School 2019: 15 S
eptember - 26 October 2019 (plus / minus a few days (as logistical or weath
er conditions may require changes of travel dates)\nPort of exit and entry:
Tromsø, Norway\nCosts: There will be no registration fee for the MOSAiC S
chool 2019. The only costs participants will have to cover themselves are t
he costs of their travel to and from Tromsø, Norway. Should travel support
become available, the MOSAiC School organizers will contact the selected pa
rticipants. However, travel support cannot be guaranteed at this point.\nTh
e MOSAiC School 2019 will be open to up to 20 early career researchers (adv
anced graduate students and PhD students with no to limited experience with
ship-based research).\nInternational experts that are part of the expediti
on will share knowledge with the students, engage in discussions and hands-
on experiences in groundbreaking research, and thus help to educate future
Arctic climate experts. In addition, the participants will help the MOSAiC
Teams on site to set up their instruments and experiments.\nAfter the end o
f the MOSAiC School the participants will have to:\n\n - serve as MOSAiC “a
mbassadors” by reporting back to their country and institutes\n - Report to
APECS and the MOSAiC organizersFor information, please visit the MOSAiC Sc
hool 2019 page (events/upcoming-event-highlights/mosaic-school-2019.html).
