SUMMARY:POLAR2018 side Meeting on Plastic at the Poles - Scar Action Group Meeting
LOCATION:Davos\, Switzerland
DESCRIPTION:Since the introduction of plastic materials in the 1950s, global production
has increased more than 500 times. Evidence of plastic debris in both Pola
r Oceans suggests that they have already spread across the world, and are t
hus recognized as one of the most important worldwide threats for oceans. H
owever, while there has been a great deal of research into plastic pollutio
n in the more populated regions of the world, little is known about the Pol
ar regions. This is an emerging and timely area of research which necessita
tes a co-ordinated scientific focus.\nThe aim of the workshop is to initiat
e a SCAR Plastic Action Group to:\n\n - Collate information on plastic poll
ution in the Antarctic and Arctic regions.\n - Assess occurrence, distribut
ion, source and fate of plastics (nano, micro and macro) in Polar regions.\
n - Estimate current levels of pollution in the poles and evaluate the impa
ct on the ecosystem.\n - Generate a Best Practice protocol for plastic coll
ection and analysis in the Polar regions. The workshop is open to scientists
from different disciplines with interest in the processes regulating the d
istribution, magnitude and ecosystem impact of plastic debris in Polar envi
ronments. Experts on marine plastic debris policy change and mitigation are
  also welcome.\n \nSunday, June 17, 2018\n9am - 12pm\nRoom: B Pischa\nOpen
