, Science, and Policy. This pass/fail, two credit or Certificate of Complet
ion course will take place 18-22 June 2018 in Portland, Maine.\nThe goal of
the course is to provide students with an interdisciplinary knowledge base
and the tools to practically and responsibly participate in Arctic affairs
.\nClimate models predict that within ten years the Arctic will be virtuall
y ice-free for at least several weeks during the year and the pace appears
to be accelerating. Abrupt climate change is producing Arctic warming and g
enerating new shipping routes, business opportunities, and access to resour
ces in ways that affect states, Indigenous peoples, the Arctic environment,
and more. Effective participation in this new Arctic requires a unique com
bination of knowledge and skills.\nCourse topics will include:\n\n - Arctic
science\n - Law of the Sea,\n - Maritime shipping,\n - Geographic informat
ion systems,\n - Maritime history,\n - Indigenous peoples,\n - North Atlant
ic trade,\n - Governance and environmental Regulation,\n - Geopolitics and
